FRIDAY MAILBAG FROM OUR COACHING COMMUNITY

A few days ago I posted a topic discussion to the VIP coaches that read this email and are on my blog.  I asked them to email me any questions they had or any topics they would like to have me discuss and answer in a weekly mailbag type email.  There were many great responses, but we are going to focus in 2 areas today.

We had several responses regarding creating a winning culture for your program.  I spent a few days thinking about this and here is where I think the discussion starts.  If you have ever watched Marcus Lemonis, CEO of Camping World, on CNBC’s The Profit he goes into very average and below averages business and helps them turn around with a 3 step system he calls people, process, and product.  This is unbelievably sound advice for creating a profitable culture in business and creating a winning culture in sports.

Invest in your players.  Just as David Marquet became captain of a Navy submarine and was faced with a crew he didn’t know, a vessel he wasn’t familiar with and a culture that was ranked last in the Navy.  He had no choice to play the hand he was dealt.  Giving his crew ownership of their decisions and cultivating an environment of competency within his crew not only gave them pride in what happened but also gave them confidence in their decisions and skills to which they had been trained for, which is HUGE for your players.  Ultimately you are guiding your ship, but your aren’t fixing the meals, cleaning the decks, arming the torpedos and navigating all at the same time.  Empower your players with your WHY and see everything start to fall into place.

Invest in your process.  More games are lost than won in youth and high school baseball.  To me, losing games boils down to 3 key areas.  Too many walks, too many errors, and unproductive hitting ie too many pop-ups and strikeouts.  Our entire development process revolves around these 3 things.  Pitchers commanding their pitches, defenders making routine plays, and productive hitting.  Inside of that, we want to be the hardest working team, the hardest playing team.  We will play without fear of physical failure.  Mental errors, lack of effort, and poor attitudes are unacceptable in our program.  Those ultimately fall at your feet and are covered in the final point of this article.

Invest in your product.  If they fired you today and hired me (which won’t happen) the first thing I want to do is look at your facility.  What will I find?  Is it well maintained?  Clean? Organized?  How many great teams play on fields where the coach took no pride in how it was presented?  My guess is not many.  Next I want to see your uniforms.  Is this something the kids would be excited about wearing?  Will they take pride in putting on our colors?  Once we show our people we are taking pride in how our program is perceived, you will be surprised how people  will buy into the commitment needed for how you will play the game which is your product everyone will ultimately judge you on.

Which brings me to the last point which is an email from a coach inside our VIP community.

I was talking to a coach 15 or 20 years back and we started talking about expectations for a season. Daily, weekly, game to game and for a season. We finally came to the conclusion that it is not what you expect it is what you accept from your team that shapes outcomes. I lived by that every day. Because it really is not what you expect it is what you accept and I think a lot of coaches get caught up in what they expect and fail to make the team rise to that expectation they have. Naturally you need to have a feel for your talent and who you are playing.

What are you accepting from your program?  Are your people sound?
